Stargazing and Dr Who for Cubs at Centre for Life Newcastle

posted 27 Apr 2010, 04:42 by Jonathan Chicken

The Life Science Centre in Newcastle is offering Brownies and Cubs specially-tailored visits which will help them towards their Stargazer and Astronomer badges.

On the same day, the groups will also be able to enjoy the great Doctor Who exhibition at Life which starts on 23rd May.

For their Stargazer and Astronomer badges, groups of Brownies and Cubs will watch a planetarium show in the Life Planetarium – the largest planetarium in the North. They will explore the night-time stars, learn how to recognise many of our constellations and discover the ancient legends behind them. They will be shown a close up look at a star, as well as our sun and her family of planets. The children also learn about the phases of the moon, find out about meteor showers and watch the Northern Lights.

During a Solar System workshop, Brownies and Cubs will make star themed items and learn more about our solar system. They will discover how sailors used the position of the North Star to navigate the seas and they can make a constellation tube to take home to see stars even during the daytime.

Group leaders receive a Badge Booklet outlining: the requirements of the badge; what has been achieved during the visit to Life; and any additional activities that need to be undertaken to complete the badges.

In addition to the above activities, groups can enjoy all of Life’s main hands-on exhibitions, activities and events including Doctor Who; exciting live science shows in the Life theatre, the new motion ride Solar Coaster and much more, all for a one-off badge day admission price.

Badge Days cost £6.99 per Brownie/Cub and are available on selected weekends in June and July. Free entry is given for up to four group leaders per group. A minimum group size of 15 is required and booking is essential.

Groups can bring packed lunches but meals are available (pre-booking necessary). Cost: £2.75 children, £4.00 adults.

Brownie and Cub badge days are taking place at Life on the following weekends during 2010:

June 19th & 20th, 26th & 27th and July 3rd & 4th, 10th & 11th, 17th & 18th
